Spotlight on Issues

Georgia’s Education:
Georgia Federation of Democratic Women has joined with other concerned professional organizations, civil rights groups, and parents groups to oppose the Constitutional Amendment which will be on the ballot in 2016 which will create Opportunity School Districts (OSD).
We do not feel that the passage of this amendment is good for Georgia Public Schools. A committee has been formed to help inform the public about the amendment and its possible consequences.
If you are interested in receiving information about the opposition to this amendment, SR287 and on what you can do to help defeat this amendment, contact Bette Holland at

Medicaid Expansion:

GFDW has tirelessly championed expanding Medicaid for Georgians since it was first enacted through the Affordable Care Act.

Georgia Medicaid Expansion would give an additional 478,000 uninsured seniors and families coverage who otherwise go without valuable medical services. The expansion would be paid 100 percent by federal funds for the first three years and federal funds would never fall below 90 percent of costs.

It is clear that all families and taxpayers of Georgia deserve to have HB 823 “Expand Medicaid Now” enacted NOW.” No More Political Play With The Taxes We Pay’. All families deserve coverage.

If you believe this is good for Georgians, sign the online petition to Expand Medicaid at expand-medicaid-now

Women In Blue Day

Join Us for Women in Blue Day at the Georgia Capitol-February 10th!

It is with pleasure that I announce February 10th, 2016 as GFDW Day at the Georgia Capitol. Our members will be advocating for legislation impacting women, children and Georgia’s families. We’ll take a quick break for lunch, and spend the afternoon speaking with Legislators, Committee Members and our Democratic Leadership.

You’ll hear remarks from our brilliant Minority Leader Representative Stacey Abrams and connect with your fellow GFDW members all the while learning to hone your lobbying skills.

The day begins with a short briefing at Coverdell Legislative Office Building (across from Capitol) Room #510 at 9:00 am. We will walk over to the Capitol Building in time for the gaveling in of the session, about 10:00 am. Members are welcome to sit in either the House or the Senate galleries to watch the morning session.

A full day is planned, however you’re welcome to join us for any part of it. The capitol is filled with interesting folks to talk to, political trivia, Georgia history and the opportunity to watch our elected officials in action.

Every minute of a Legislative day is dynamic and exciting, I invite you to be part of it.
